Embarking on a journey to preserve the essence of Athens’ rich cultural heritage, we went into the city’s heart to document the architectural wonders that have graced its skyline for generations. This is a project for ‘Capturing the Complexity: Rex Theater and Sikiarideio Building,’ an extraordinary experience in the realm of 3D documentation. Within the bustling streets of downtown Athens, amidst the echoes of history, our dedicated team undertook a remarkable mission – to immortalize the iconic Rex Theater and its neighbouring neoclassical gem, the Sikiarideio building on Pheidiou Street. In just seven days, armed with cutting-edge laser scanners, we embarked on a meticulous exploration, unravelling the intricate details of these historical structures and navigating a labyrinth of rooms.
For the 3D Scanning of the building, our engineers used a Leica RTC360 laser scanner that measures up to 2 million points per second with the parallel usage of a High Dynamic Range (HDR) camera for attributing true-colour tones to the final cloud. However, for the higher levels of the building and especially to capture the details of the façade, it was essential to use the Leica ScanStation P40 laser scanner with its advanced capabilities to withstand the significant height of 40-50m and the steep incidence angle, with the 3D positional accuracy of 3mm at 50m; 6mm at 100m.
